Buying a New Digital Camera

compact-digital-cameraAre you completely new to digital photography or an experienced photographer? In the market for a new digital camera or just looking to replace your old one? The search for a new digital camera can be a daunting one, especially for inexperienced photographers who are unfamiliar with digital photography and camera features. Here we will examine some guide points to note when choosing the best digital camera for you.

Camera Resolution (Megapixels)

Generally the resolution (or number of megapixels) of a digital camera should reflect the use of the camera. If you are a general photographer and only looking to put pictures on your blog, website or in an email then a 3 megapixel camera should be sufficient. If you are going to print your own pictures, such as a family portrait, then you will need a camera of over 3 megapixel capacity – this shouldn’t be a problem as many new digital cameras are 8 or even 10 megapixels.

As a general guide – the higher the number of megapixels, the higher the quality of the printed photos, and the larger the photos you will be able to print without losing image quality. With a 10 megapixel camera you should be able to print photos up to a massive 13 x 19 inches!

Optical Zoom

Most modern digital cameras have optical zoom – to allow you to get up close, visually speaking, to your subject. Popular cameras are usually 3x 4x or 5x and are suitable for everyday digital photography. Some more expensive cameras may have 10x optical zoom or up to 20x wide angle optical zoom.

Camera Batteries

Most digital cameras take the standard AA batteries – although some have their own rechargeable battery packs. Make sure you have a good supply of single use or fully charged rechargeable AA batteries to hand as nothing is more annoying than missing a ‘once in a lifetime’ photo opportunity because your camera batteries are flat.

Memory Cards & USB Cables

To download your photos to your computer or laptop you need a USB cable which is normally included when you buy a new camera. You will also probably need an SD memory card which will save your pictures so that you can print them out at a print-shop or now many new tvs have a SD memory card slot so that you can view your photos on a large screen tv.
